TERRY TOTTEN, Head Coach
Coach Totten is a mortgage broker who lives in Point Breeze. He is a 1976 graduate of Central, as are all the males in his family.
He played strong safety at Central and IUP, where he was named All District, All East, and All American. Terry has coached for 27 years: 10 years at Duquesne University; 6 years at IUP; 3 years at Seton LaSalle; 1 year at Morningside and 6 years at Central.
He was nominated for IAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2001. Terry was Defensive Coordinator for the 2003 WPIAL Champions and State Runner-up team and 2004 WPIAL Champions and State Championship Team, finishing with a 16-0 season.
Terry came to coach at Central because, “I love Central! You can leave Central, but it really never leaves you.”
RON FUCHS, Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach
Ron and his wife, Allison, have three daughters Ashley, Morgan, and Lexi Rae and a son, Tanner Joseph. They live in Cranberry Township. Ron is an Admissions Coordinator for Glen Mills Schools. He is also a Central alumnus, graduating in 1982; and his uncle Bob Fuchs (Bammer) graduated from Central in 1951. Ron played as an offensive guard at Central and at Juniata College. He has been coaching for 17 years, and is in this 9th season as a Central coach, fulfilling a life-long desire to coach here. Ron also coached at Kutztown High School for two years and Glen Mills Schools for seven years.
MIKE KENNEDY, Defensive End Coach
Mike is a teacher, and lives in Mount Lebanon. He is a 1975 Central Graduate, as are his brothers, Paul ’68, and Bob ’76. Mike played at Central as a Tight End from 1971 to 1974. He has coached for 25 years, and is in his 10th year at Central. He also coached at Duquesne University for two years, Seton LaSalle for three years, West Allegheny for three years, and St. Bede’s for six years. Mike was on the coaching staffs of two WPIAL AAA Championship teams (Seton LaSalle, 1990 and West Allegheny 1997), two Quad A Championships (Central 2003, 2004), and Quad A State Championship (Central, 2004).
RICHARD CAPRETTA, Defensive Back and Wide Receiver Coach
Coach Capretta lives in the North Hills, and is a 1982 Central graduate. He is the Dean of Students and Assistant Athletic Director at Central. He played slot back and receiver at Central, where he was named All-Conference and also, at Duquesne University where he was team captain. Rick has been coaching for 19 years – all at Central, and says, “It is an honor and a privilege to coach at such a great institution. Central is the finest school in America!!”
DAVID FLEMING, Offensive Coordinator
Coach Fleming, his wife, Caroline, and son David reside in West Mifflin. He graduated from Central in 1992. His cousin, Tony Colazzi, also graduated from Central. Fleming played outside linebacker and wing back at Central and later, at James Madison University. He was named All-State, All Conference, Fab 22, and Finest 44. Coach Fleming coached at Steel Valley for three years, and has been coaching at Central for six years. He chose to coach at Central because “I bleed Blue and Gold!”
RODNEY STEELE, Running Back Coach
Coach Steele lives with his wife, Coyleen and their sons, Rodney III, Vincenzo, and Rico in West Homestead. He was born and raised in Hazelwood and attended St. Stephen’s grade school. A 1993 graduate of South High, he attended Pitt for one year and graduated from IUP in 1997. Steele was a 4-year starter and was the 1992 & 1993 All-City Linebacker. In 1992, he combined with Phil Dudley to lead the City League in rushing yards as a tandem with 1,645 yards. Coach Steele began coaching as a defensive linebacker coach at South Hills in 1997. At Brashear, he was a running back coach for two years, and then came to Central in 2000. In 2004, he was awarded the coaching job of the north team of the Coaches Corner Classic Midget All Star Game.
STEVE BEZILA, Offensive Line Coach
Steve Bezila resides in Shaler and has a degree in Elementary Education. He also has a major in Administration of Justice and a minor in Legal Studies. He attended Hofstra University on a full scholarship. Coach Bezila graduated from Central in 1999 and he was a starter on the Vikings Varsity Football team for three years. He was a senior captain, All-Conference in his senior year and played in the Foothills Football Classic.
Bezila coached at the Morningside Vikings (12-13 year olds) in 2002 and 2003. He came to Central in 2004, coaching the freshmen offensive and defensive lines.
LOU LAMANNA, Tight End Coach
Lou is a 1979 Central Catholic graduate. He was a 3-year letter winner and started at Tight End his junior and senior seasons and was the team’s leading receiver both years. Lou formed a potent passing combination with teammate Dan Marino. He was an All-Conference player his junior and senior seasons. Lou played in the Big 33 Classic following his senior season. He played his college football at the University of Pittsburgh. This is Lou’s fifth year on the Central Catholic coaching staff. Lou is a CPA who currently works for Carnegie Mellon University. He resides in Squirrel Hill and is married with three children, Louis III who is currently a sophomore at Central Catholic, Natalie and Daniel.
ROB MODERO, Linebacker and Running Back Coach
Coach Modero begins his 3rd year as Linebackers and Running Backs Coach. Born in Hazelwood, he is a graduate of St. Stephen’s and Bishop Boyle. He also attended CCAC and competed in club football. Coach Modero spent much of his football career in the semi-pro leagues, including 6 years with the Greater Pittsburgh Football League; 5 years with the Hazelwood Volunteers, one year with the Beechview Bulls and 5 years with the Pittsburgh Colts. He coached at Bishop Boyle for one season, three years at West Mifflin and the last 16 seasons at Baldwin. Coach Modero’s uncle, John Zanderelli ’31, was a member of the first graduating class of CCHS and is looking forward to “carrying on the proud tradition.” Coach Modero and his wife, Rose and daughter, Alexis, reside in Penn Hills.
ANTHONY COLAIZZI, Quarterback Coach
Anthony lives in West Homestead with his wife, Sharon, daughter, Lia, and son Antonio ’05. Antonio was a starter for the 2004 State Championship team as a receiver, cornerback and return specialist. Anthony is a 1975 graduate of Gladstone High School.
Anthony coached as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Colts Semi-Pro team from 1979-1981. He was on Head Coach Dave “Rooster” Fleming’s staff. He also coached at Steel Valley High School from 1991-1996 as the quarterback/receivers coach. He has been at Central since 2005.
ROY PHILLIS, Punter and Special Teams Coach
Coach Phillis and his wife, Dottie, live in McCandless Township. They have a daughter, Amy.
Phillis played football at Burgettstown High School and then went on to play at Slippery Rock University. Coach Phillis coached track for two years at Burgettstown High School. He then helped coach baseball, wrestling and football at North Hills High School, as well as some previous time at Central.
Coach Phillis was a wrestling referee for 25 years. He was recognized for his ability by being asked to referee for many National High School Wrestling Championships and NCAA Championships.
ROBERT R. FUCHS, Support Staff
Robert has two grown children, Robert and Kim. He is retired, and lives in Edgewood with his wife, Kitty. Robert is a Central graduate (1951). His nephew, Ron (1982) is also a Central alum and coach. His legacy continues at CCHS, where his grandson, Brian, is currently a sophomore and his other grandson, Matthew graduated in 2007.
Robert has coached most of his adult life. He coached several years at St. Bede's Elementary School and periodically at Central, following his St. Bede players to High School. He has received many trophies, plaques and certificates of appreciation and recognition as well as being the first person elected to St. Bede’s “First Team.”
DR. WILLIAM O. HAHN, Support Staff
Dr. Hahn and his wife, April, have three children, Bill, Amy and Heather. He lives in Squirrel Hill. He is a 1968 Central graduate, and comes from a dedicated Central family. His father graduated in 1931, his brother in 1968, nephews in 1996 and 1999, and his son in 1998. He is also starting his 30th year coaching at Central, and has been coaching for a total of 32 years. Additionally, he volunteers as an assistant track coach at Oakland Catholic. He is a member (and past president) of the Western PA Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has been leading the Central pre-game chapel services for over 23 years.
ANDY MACURAK, Trainer/Strength and Conditioning Coach
Andy lives in the South Hills with his wife, Connie, and is employed by UPMC Center for Sports Medicine as a Certified Athletic Trainer. He worked as a trainer for six years, at Laurel Highlands High School in Uniontown, Canevin Catholic High School, and is in his 8th year as a trainer at Central. He also was a seasonal intern with the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Central fields a very competitive athletic team in all of their teams. The student athletes at Central are the best group of kids I worked with.”
